WhatsApp group status how it works today
A guide for admins of professional groups who want to use status to promote notices to members without flooding the chat.
How it works in practice
Direct answer: The feature documented in the WhatsApp Help Center is mentioning a group in your status: when you mention the group, all its members can see that status, even people outside your status audience, and those mentioned can reshare it. A status posted inside the group itself, visible only to members, has been reported in test versions, but at the time of this review it has no Help Center page; treat it as a feature in testing that may not appear for you.
In short:
- Official: mentioning a group in your status lets all members see that status.
- People mentioned can reshare the status.
- A group only status is not documented in the Help Center yet.

How to mention a group in your status
According to the Help Center, when creating a status you can mention people or groups. When you mention a group, all group members can see that status, even people outside your audience. The mention does not change the audience settings of future statuses.
- Open the Updates tab and create a status.
- Tap the mention icon and choose the group.
- Post.
People mentioned can share the status with their own audience. Sharing does not reveal your name or number, but the content can travel outside the group.
Group only status: what is known
Specialized press reported in 2025 tests of a status created inside the group and visible only to members. At the time of this review, the Help Center has no page about this feature. If it appears in your group info, use it; if not, there is no setting to turn it on.
Do not plan group communication around a feature that is not documented. For notices that must arrive, use the chat itself.
When to use status and when to use the chat
| Criterion | Status mentioning the group | Message in the group |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Disappears after 24 hours | Stays in the chat |
| Notification | The mention notifies the group | Follows each member's notification settings |
| Can be pinned | No | Yes, by admins |
| Best for | Quick, visual promotion | Notices with deadlines, rules and links |
For important notices, combine both: a status to get attention and a pinned group message with details. See how to mention everyone in a group.
Notices that do not get lost
Status depends on each member opening the Updates tab. For agendas and deadlines, 9bot posts scheduled notices in the group and keeps information available in commands such as .agenda. 7-day trial; with the coupon FIRST9, monthly plans are 50% off for the first 3 months after the trial.
