What happens if the group admin leaves or loses their number
A guide for companies and communities that depend on WhatsApp groups and cannot lose control when an admin leaves, changes number or loses access.
How it works in practice
Direct answer: If the admin leaves and there are other admins, nothing changes for the group. If they were the only admin, the Help Center says WhatsApp picks a random participant as the new admin. If the admin uses the Change number feature, the groups are notified and they stay in them. If they lose their phone, they can register the same number on another device. Inactive accounts are generally deleted after 120 days, and then the admin leaves the groups.
In short:
- Only admin left: a random participant becomes admin.
- Change number keeps the groups; a lost phone is solved by registering the number again.
- Prevention: always at least two active admins.

What happens in each scenario
| Situation | What happens to the group | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Admin leaves and there are other admins | Nothing changes; the other admins carry on | Help Center |
| Only admin leaves | A participant is picked at random as admin | Admin settings |
| Admin leaves and rejoins | Comes back as a participant; must be promoted again | Admin settings |
| Admin uses Change number | Groups are notified and they stay in the groups | Change number |
| Admin loses their phone or it is stolen | Registers the same number on another device and recovers the account | Lost or stolen phone |
| Admin account goes inactive | Inactive accounts are generally deleted after 120 days | Inactive accounts |
| Group creator leaves | Stops being admin; the other admins carry on | Manage admins |
When the only admin leaves
The Help Center says that if the only admin leaves, a participant is picked at random to be the new admin. WhatsApp does not let you choose who, and support cannot change admins afterwards. In a professional group, that can hand control to someone outside the company.
Before leaving a group you run, promote at least one trusted person. See how to add an admin.
When the admin changes or loses their number
Planned change: use Settings > Account > Change number on the phone. According to the Help Center, groups are notified automatically and the admin stays in them. The change cannot be made on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
Lost or stolen phone: get a SIM with the same number from the carrier and register WhatsApp on a new device. The Help Center explains that this logs out the lost device.
Cancelled number: if the number does not come back and the account goes unused, the Help Center says inactive accounts are generally deleted after 120 days. Until then, the admin is still listed in the group but does not answer.
Continuity plan for professional groups
- Two or more admins in every group, from different teams or shifts.
- A company number as the main admin, instead of an employee's personal number.
- Regular review of the admin list when someone changes role or leaves the company.
- A group register: name, link and admins of each group.
