How to hide your number in WhatsApp groups: usernames, communities and privacy
In a regular group, every member can see your number. Here is what changed with usernames and which settings reduce your exposure.
Direct answer: In regular WhatsApp groups, other members can see your phone number. To limit that, turn on a username when it reaches your account (rolling out gradually since July 2026): people who don't have your number saved see your username instead. It also helps to restrict who can add you to groups (Settings > Privacy > Groups) and to prefer communities and channels for large audiences.
In short:
- Regular group: your number is visible to members.
- Usernames (2026) hide your number from people who don't have it saved.
- Restrict who can add you to groups and review photo, about and last seen.
Who sees your number in a group
In a regular group, any member can tap your name and see your number. Even after you leave, your profile name and number stay in Past members for up to 60 days, according to the Help Center. In large public groups this exposes your number to strangers, which makes private-message scams and spam easier.

Usernames: the feature that hides your number
Meta announced WhatsApp usernames in June 2026. With a username active, people who don't have your number in their contacts see the username instead, including in new chats. Key points:
- Reserve it in Settings > Account > Username.
- Rollout is gradual, by country; WhatsApp notifies you in the app when it is active.
- People who already have your number still see it.
- An optional username key lets you control who can start a chat with you.
Settings that reduce exposure
| Setting | Where | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Who can add me to groups | Settings > Privacy > Groups | Choose My contacts or My contacts except... |
| Profile photo, about and last seen | Settings > Privacy | Show to your contacts only |
| Block and report | In the person's chat | Use it when someone from a group DMs you with spam or scams |
Communities and channels expose less
For very large announcement audiences, a channel shares content without exposing followers' numbers to each other, and a community organizes several groups under one announcement group. Compare in community, group or channel.
If you run the group
You are responsible for the space you create. State in the description that numbers are visible, don't export or share the member list (see what data admins can collect), turn on member approval and use a bot with anti-link to stop people who join only to harvest contacts. 9bot does this with anti-spam, strikes and welcome messages with rules; 7 days free.
