How to delete a WhatsApp group: for everyone, just for you and what remains
Deleting, exiting and clearing a chat are different things on WhatsApp. Here is the right path for each case and what other members still see.
Direct answer: To delete a WhatsApp group for everyone you must be an admin: remove every participant in Group info, tap Exit group and then Delete group. If you leave without removing everyone, you only delete the group from your phone and it keeps existing for others. A deleted group cannot be restored.
In short:
- Only an admin truly deletes: remove everyone, exit, then Delete group.
- Leaving without removing everyone deletes it just for you.
- History stays on other members' phones until they delete it.
Steps: delete the group for everyone (admin)
- Open the group and tap its name.
- Tap each participant and choose Remove. Repeat until only you are left.
- Tap Exit group.
- Tap Delete group and confirm.
The process is described in the WhatsApp Help Center. There is no official button to remove everyone at once: in large groups, split the job with other admins.
A deleted group cannot be restored. If it might be useful again, consider restricting messages to admins instead of deleting.

What other members still see
- Deleting or removing does not erase the group from others' phones: they still see it and its history until they delete it, but no one can send messages.
- People who leave appear in Past members in group info, with profile name and number, for up to 60 days.
- If the only admin leaves, another member becomes admin at random. To truly close a group, do the full process.
Leaving a scam group

Before deleting: alternatives
Many groups get deleted because they became hard to manage: spam, flooding and inactive members. If that is the problem, you can remove inactive members, let only admins post for a while or automate moderation with 9bot (anti-spam, anti-link and strikes). Try it free for 7 days.
