Direct answer: WhatsApp suspends a group when it believes the group violated its Terms of Service. It relies on user reports and machine learning to detect bulk or automated messaging, and it also evaluates the group's subject and profile photo. While a group is suspended, nobody can send messages, add members or download or forward media. Only an admin can request a review: open the group, tap Request review and confirm. Reviews are typically done within 24 hours, and you can only request one once.

Suspended group, suspended community or banned account: which one is it?

People often call all three a "ban", but they are different situations with different recovery paths. This table summarizes what the WhatsApp Help Center says about each one (checked on October 9, 2026):

SituationWhat you seeWhat changesWho can request a review
Suspended group"This group is suspended"Nobody in the group can send messages, add members or download or forward mediaGroup admins only
Suspended community"This community is suspended"The same restrictions apply to the whole communityCommunity admins only
Banned account"This phone number can't use WhatsApp"The number loses access to chats and backups while it is bannedThe account owner, inside the app

In other words, a group can be suspended while your account keeps working normally, and the opposite can happen too. If your account is the one that was banned, the problem isn't the group, and you request a review from the app's opening screen, as explained in About account bans.

Why WhatsApp suspends groups

According to the Help Center, WhatsApp suspends groups that violate its Terms of Service. To find them, it combines three sources:

  • user reports from members who tap report inside the group;
  • machine learning that identifies and bans accounts engaging in bulk or automated messaging;
  • basic group information, such as the subject and profile photo, evaluated to see whether the group or an admin may have violated the Terms.

WhatsApp also says it may restrict groups to comply with legal obligations. In practice, the patterns that draw attention are predictable:

Risk signalWhy it matters
The same message sent repeatedly to many groups or membersThis is the behavior the Help Center links to spam
A group name or photo promising easy money, adult content or scamsThe subject and photo are evaluated directly
Lots of people added without asking to joinPeople who didn't want to be there tend to report
Too many links or unknown URL shortenersA common pattern in scams and phishing
Spammers and scammers posting freely in the groupReports against their content hit the whole group

None of these lists is official or complete, because WhatsApp doesn't publish its exact criteria. But every item above shows up as a spam or scam signal in the Help Center itself.

How to request a review for a suspended group, step by step

If you're an admin and you think the suspension was a mistake, follow the steps in the Help Center: how to request a review for a suspended group:

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the suspended group.
  2. In the This group is suspended popup, select Request review.
  3. Select Ok to confirm.

You'll get a notification when the review is complete, typically within 24 hours. If the review is successful, the group can resume activity. If it isn't, the group stays suspended and admins and members can only tap Delete group.

You only get one try. You can request a suspension review only once. Before tapping the button, remove whoever was spamming and review the group name and photo if they could be misread.

Communities work the same way: click the suspended community, choose Request review in the popup and confirm, as described in how to request a review for a suspended community. For a banned account, tap Request review in the app. If that option doesn't appear, the ban is final.

Beware of "unban" services: according to WhatsApp, third-party services can't ban or unban an account, and contacting support by email or chat won't change the outcome. Anyone charging to recover a group or number is running a scam.

If the group doesn't come back: how to start over without repeating the mistake

When a review is rejected, the group can't be recovered. The best path is to start again, more carefully:

  1. Find the likely cause. Review what was sent in the last few days, the group name and photo, and who joined recently.
  2. Tell members through another channel, such as a WhatsApp channel, email or social media, and explain that there will be a new group.
  3. Create the new group with clear rules in the description and a pinned message. These WhatsApp group rules templates help you get started.
  4. Use an invite link with approval instead of adding everyone at once, so only people who want to be there join.
  5. Take it slow in the first few days. Avoid sending the same announcement to many groups and spread new joins over time.

If you're bringing many people back, the guide to importing members without losing control shows how to do it in stages.

How to keep your group from being suspended

No setting guarantees immunity. What helps are habits that reduce reports and keep the group from looking like spam:

  • Use community announcements instead of sending the same message to several groups. The Help Center itself recommends this to reduce the risk of being flagged as spam.
  • Only people who want to join: share the invite link and turn on member approval instead of adding contacts without asking.
  • An unambiguous name and photo: avoid terms that suggest scams, betting, easy money or adult content.
  • Published and enforced rules: people who break them leave quickly, before the whole group gets reported.
  • Link and spam filters: scammers often join and post links right away. An automatic filter removes those messages even when no admin is online.
  • More than one admin: covers different time zones and keeps spam from staying up for hours.
  • No modified apps: WhatsApp has specific rules about banning accounts that use unofficial apps.

The security settings guide for large groups and the guide on how to deal with member spam go into each point.

Do bots and automation increase the risk of suspension?

It depends on what the bot does. The Help Center talks about accounts engaging in bulk or automated messaging, so the risk lies in behavior: blasting the same message to dozens of groups, adding people in bulk or posting links nonstop. Automation that supports moderation goes the other way.

9bot joins the group as a linked device, using a QR code or pairing code, and works as an assistant admin: Anti-Spam and link moderation remove suspicious messages, member approval uses filters and daily limits, and scheduling lets you control the pace of announcements. Even so, responsibility for the content stays with the admins. No tool can prevent a suspension if the group is used for spam.

FAQ

Why was my WhatsApp group suspended?
Because WhatsApp believes the group violated its Terms of Service. It uses user reports and machine learning to detect bulk or automated messaging, and it evaluates the group subject and profile photo.
How do I recover a suspended WhatsApp group?
An admin should open the group, tap Request review in the "This group is suspended" popup and confirm. Reviews are typically completed within 24 hours. If the review is successful, the group resumes activity.
Can I request a review more than once?
No. According to the WhatsApp Help Center, you can only request a suspension review once. Remove spammers and check the group name and photo before you request it.
Can regular members request a review?
No. Only group admins can request a review of a suspended group. In a community, only community admins can.
Is a suspended group the same as a banned account?
No. A group can be suspended while your account works normally. A banned account shows "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" and has its own review request.
Will using a bot get my group suspended?
The risk is in behavior, not the tool: repeated bulk messages, adding people without consent and excessive links are spam signals. A moderation bot helps remove spammers, but it doesn't guarantee immunity.
