AI bot (ChatGPT) in a WhatsApp group
A guide for admins considering AI in professional groups who need to separate what is allowed, what is risky and what a regular bot already solves.
How it works in practice
Direct answer: There are three ways to have AI in a WhatsApp group. The first is Meta AI, which WhatsApp itself lets you add to groups and which only reads messages that mention it. The second is your own bot on the official API, subject to the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms: since 15 January 2026 they prohibit providers of general purpose AI assistants but allow AI used to serve the business's own customers; in Brazil, the competition authority Cade suspended this rule as a preventive measure. The third is connecting ChatGPT through unofficial apps, which violates the WhatsApp terms and puts the number at risk.
In short:
- Meta AI can be added to groups and only reads what is mentioned to it.
- On the API, general purpose AI assistants are prohibited since 15 January 2026; in Brazil the rule is suspended by Cade.
- Connecting ChatGPT through unofficial apps puts the number at risk.

The three ways to have AI in a group
| Option | Status | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Meta AI in the group | A WhatsApp feature; reads only what mentions it | Low; admins can remove it or block mentions |
| Your own bot on the official API | Allowed to serve the business's customers; general purpose assistants prohibited by the terms | Medium; depends on the use and the rule in your country |
| ChatGPT through an unofficial app | Violates the WhatsApp Terms of Service | High; the number can be banned |

Meta's rule on AI assistants
From 15 January 2026, the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms prohibit AI providers from using the platform to offer general purpose assistants when AI is the main service. Business bots that use AI for support, orders or bookings remain allowed. Developers can also connect AI tools through the 9bot MCP server.
In Brazil, Cade opened an inquiry and applied a preventive measure suspending these terms. The situation can change; check the Cade page before deciding.
Risks of AI in a professional group
- Made up answers: language models can get a price, deadline or rule wrong, and the answer speaks for the group.
- Personal data: messages sent to an external AI leave WhatsApp; data protection rules still apply.
- Account: unofficial integrations can lead to the number being banned.
For groups with customers, write down whether AI may be used and which data must not be sent to it. Advanced chat privacy blocks Meta AI mentions in the group.
When a command bot is enough
Most questions in professional groups repeat: hours, rules, links, deadlines. Fixed answers by command are predictable and invent nothing. 9bot works this way: custom commands, welcome messages, scheduled notices and link moderation, on the number connected to the group. 7 day free trial; with the coupon FIRST9, monthly plans are 50% off for the first 3 months after the trial. Free and paid options are compared in group bot: free or paid.
