How to automate a WhatsApp channel: news, RSS and the real limits

Publishers and creators want every new article to show up in their WhatsApp channel on its own. Here's what WhatsApp actually offers, a semi-automatic workflow that works today, and when an automated group does the job better.

Direct answer: As of our check on October 9, 2026, WhatsApp has no official way to auto-post to a channel: channels have no built-in RSS, and Meta's API platform has no feature for posting to channels (Meta's channel API is read-only, for research). The safest approach is semi-automatic: news arrives automatically in a private team group, and an admin forwards the best items to the channel in a few taps. If you need fully automatic delivery, a news group with RSS is what works today.

How a WhatsApp channel works (and why it matters)

Before automating, it helps to recall the channel rules, according to the Help Center (about channels) and related pages:

  • it's a one-way broadcast: followers can't reply to updates or message admins; they can only react and vote in polls;
  • followers' notifications are muted by default, and each person has to turn them on;
  • channel visitors can see the last 30 days of updates, and WhatsApp reviews updates against the Channels Guidelines;
  • the owner can invite up to 16 admins, who can create, edit and delete updates (channel admins);
  • updates can be deleted up to 30 days after sending (deleting updates).

So a channel is great for reach and privacy (nobody sees anyone's number), but not for conversation, and posting volume matters, since every post competes for attention in the Updates tab.

What official options exist for automating channels

We checked Meta's developer documentation on October 9, 2026:

  • the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API) covers business-to-customer messaging, templates, webhooks and groups. We found no feature in it for posting channel updates;
  • the Meta Content Library API includes channel and channel-update data, but it's a read-only research tool and doesn't publish anything;
  • the WhatsApp app has no RSS reader or automatic feed import for channels.

Some third-party services promise to post to channels "via API". They aren't Meta's official API: they generally work through a session connected to your number. The Help Center warns that linking your account to unofficial apps or websites can lead to a ban, so weigh the risk before handing over access to the number that owns your channel.

If a vendor claims to have an "official WhatsApp channels API", ask for the link to Meta's documentation. As of this check, we couldn't find one.

The semi-automatic workflow that works today: newsroom group + forwarding

The Help Center shows that admins can forward messages to their own channel, including several at once. That makes a low-effort workflow possible:

  1. Create a private group with just your team (the "newsroom").
  2. Connect your site's RSS feed to that group with a bot. In 9bot, it's under Automations > RSS Feed, at the frequency you choose.
  3. New articles land in the newsroom group automatically, with a link and preview.
  4. A channel admin picks the best ones, taps Forward, chooses the channel and confirms with Forward to channel.

Two caveats: forwarded messages get a Forwarded label, and everything sent to the channel is public. If you'd rather avoid the label, copy the article link and post it directly in the channel; with the link preview, it takes less than a minute.

Human curation is an advantage: the channel gets only the 3 to 5 strongest stories of the day instead of the whole feed, which makes people less likely to unfollow.

Channel vs news group: which one to automate

CriteriaChannelNews group

Member privacyNobody sees anyone's numberMembers can see each other
ConversationReactions and polls onlyOpen, or admins-only messaging
NotificationsMuted by defaultOn by default (members can mute)

Many publishers use both: the channel for reach and the RSS group for readers who want everything as it happens. See the full comparison in community vs group vs channel and, to send the same story to several groups, this guide.

Best practices for posting news to your channel

  • A fixed rhythm: predictable times (morning, lunch, evening) work better than bursts.
  • Short format: a strong headline, one line of context and the link with an image preview.
  • Less is more: post a selection to the channel and leave the full feed to the group.
  • Polls: use them now and then to learn which topics your audience wants.
  • Promotion: your channel has its own link and QR code, which you can share in chats, status and other apps (sharing your channel).

When an automated group works better than a channel

If your priority is for every article to arrive on its own, the minute it's published, a group is currently the format that allows it with a bot. With 9bot, the group receives RSS news at the times you set, and you can switch the group to admins-only messaging so it works like a "channel" with notifications on. The trade-off is group size; for bigger audiences, combine several groups in a community or keep the channel for reach and the group for your most engaged readers. The benefits of bots for news publishers covers this model in more detail.

FAQ

Can I auto-post an RSS feed to a WhatsApp channel?
Not officially, as of our October 9, 2026 check: channels have no built-in RSS and Meta's API platform has no feature for posting to channels. A semi-automatic workflow (RSS into a team group, then forward to the channel) works today.
Is there an official WhatsApp channels API?
Meta offers the Content Library API, which reads channel data for research but doesn't publish. Services that promise to post to channels via API aren't official and work through a session connected to your number.
Can I forward messages from a group to my channel?
Yes. Channel admins can forward messages and updates to their own channel, including several at once. They show a Forwarded label.
How many admins can a channel have?
The channel owner can invite up to 16 admins, who can create, edit and delete updates. Only the owner can delete the channel.
Do followers get a notification for every channel post?
Not by default. Channel notifications are muted, and each follower has to turn them on.
Channel or group: which is better for a news publisher?
A channel for reach and privacy; a group for automatic RSS delivery and notifications that are on by default. Many publishers use both.
