Direct answer: Use a group for conversation: everyone can talk, it holds up to 1,024 members and everyone can see each other. Use a community to organize up to 100 groups of one school, company or building, with up to 2,000 members and an Announcements group where only admins post. Use a channel for one-way announcements with no follower limit: only admins post and nobody sees anyone else's number.

WhatsApp community vs group vs channel: the differences in one table

All three formats let you reach a lot of people, but they work very differently. This summary uses data from the WhatsApp Help Center (checked on October 9, 2026):

Groups: for real conversation

Groups are the classic format: everyone can send messages, photos, voice notes and documents, and admins decide whether the chat is open or admin-only. A group holds up to 1,024 members, everyone can see each other, and you can make voice or video calls with up to 32 people.

Use a group when the exchange between people is the point: a class, a project team, a club, a customer group where people ask questions. The downside shows up as it grows: more spam, more off-topic messages and more work for admins. That's why large groups need well-configured permissions and clear rules.

Communities: several groups under one roof

A community brings together up to 100 related groups. When you create one, WhatsApp adds an Announcements group where only community admins post and members can react and reply in a thread. Each person chooses which groups to join, and admins can hide groups so only invited people see them.

Communities are made for real-world organizations: a school with one group per class, a residential building with groups per block, a company with groups per department. They also protect privacy, because each member's number is only visible to people in the same group. By default, all members can create and suggest groups, but admins can change that under Who can add new groups (WhatsApp Help Center).

Note: you can't create a community in the WhatsApp Business app, only in regular WhatsApp. And the 2,000-member limit applies to the whole community, counting every group.

Channels: for announcements at scale

A channel is a one-way broadcast tool. Only admins post text, photos, videos, stickers and polls, and followers can react but not chat. Channels are public: anyone can find, follow and view the content, which is why they aren't end-to-end encrypted by default. In return, privacy is good: followers can't see the admins' numbers or each other's.

The owner can invite up to 16 admins to help post (Help Center: how to create a channel). Every channel has its own link and QR code for promotion. It's the right format for news sites, creators, shops and brands that want reach without opening the door to spam in replies. Which one to choose in each case

If you want to…Use
Chat with a group of people who know each otherGroup
Organize a school, building or company with several subgroupsCommunity
Send announcements to more than 2,000 peopleChannel
Send announcements and also have conversationChannel for announcements + group for conversation
Announce to people already spread across your groupsCommunity (announcements reach all members)
Send individual messages to a few contactsBroadcast list (up to 256 per list)

A practical rule: if a member's reply matters to the others, it's a group. If it only matters to you, it's a channel or a broadcast list. And if you run several groups with the same audience, a community saves you from repeating the same announcement in each one, which also lowers the risk of being flagged as spam, according to the WhatsApp Help Center itself.

How to combine groups, communities and channels

Many projects use all three at once. A news site, for example, can have an open channel for headlines, a subscriber community with topic groups, and smaller groups for discussion. A few tips to keep it tidy:

  • use standard names for community groups (topic + number);
  • post the same rules in every group and keep the full version in the description;
  • use community announcements for what applies to everyone and groups for specific topics;
  • segment your communication by interest instead of sending everything to everyone;
  • in discussion groups, automate moderation and welcome messages so admins don't burn out.

9bot works in WhatsApp groups: welcome messages, link moderation, anti-spam, member approval, scheduling and RSS. For news sites, see also how to connect content sites to WhatsApp. If your question is about limits, the guide to WhatsApp limits in 2026 has all the numbers.

FAQ

What is the difference between a WhatsApp community and a group?
A group is a single chat with up to 1,024 members where everyone can see each other. A community brings together up to 100 groups, with up to 2,000 members in total and an Announcements group where only admins post. In a community, members only see the numbers of people in the same group.
Can only admins post in a WhatsApp community?
In the Announcements group, yes: only community admins post, and members can react and reply in a thread. In the community's other groups, it depends on the permissions each group's admins set.
What are WhatsApp channels for?
For one-way announcements to a large audience. Only admins post, there's no follower limit and nobody sees anyone else's number. They aren't meant for conversation.
Can I create a community in WhatsApp Business?
No. According to the Help Center, you currently can't create communities in the WhatsApp Business app.
Should I create a channel or a group?
If conversation among members is the goal, a group. If you just need to reach a lot of people, a channel. Many projects use both: the channel for announcements and a smaller group for conversation.
